International athletes shine in Bhutan’s premier badminton event, held in Honor of His Majesty’s birthday
The Phuentsholing Sports Association Multipurpose Hall roared with energy as the 3rd edition of the Open Badminton Championship concluded on February 25, 2024. Organized to coincide with the birthday celebrations of His Royal Highness King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the five-day tournament drew athletes from Bhutan, India, Nepal, and Singapore, blending competitive spirit with national pride.

The tournament saw 85 participants (71 men, 14 women), with Bhutan fielding 32 athletes and India contributing 50. Nepal and Singapore added international flair, though the Women’s Singles category was scrapped due to low turnout. “While we regret the cancellation, the new 100+ Veteran Doubles category promoted inclusivity,” said an organizer.
Backed by the Government of India and sponsors like Hi-Tech Company and Hotel Kamsang, the event covered equipment, prizes, and logistics. The venue boasted immaculate courts, medical stations, and live-streaming via Facebook, with 24 trained umpires ensuring fair play.
With successful tournament, citing growing regional interest. “This edition’s diversity and skill set a high bar,” remarked a committee member. Medals, cash prizes, and traditional khadar scarves honored winners, as Bhutan reaffirms its commitment to nurturing badminton talent.
With spirited matches and cross-border camaraderie, the 2025 championship not only celebrated sport but also the enduring legacy of His Majesty’s leadership.
